Antique store toys

Film: Toy Story 4 Director: Josh Cooley Year: 2019
Toy Story 4

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world..and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.

Innovation: Motion Capture

In Toy Story 4, the antique store was filled with over 10,000 individual items, each with unique shapes and levels of wear. To bring this environment to life, Pixar employed Motion Capture techniques combined with procedural animation, allowing the team to animate the objects realistically while maintaining variation and detail. This approach ensured that the store felt dense, dynamic, and authentic, with every item responding naturally to interaction and movement in the scene.

To tackle this challenge, animators categorized the antiques into three age groups: fairly new, moderately aged, and extremely aged. The system then automatically applied surface details appropriate to each category, from micro-scratches on china platters to worn textures on old rugs. This approach allowed Pixar to give every item a distinct, believable history while maintaining efficiency across the store’s 10,000+ objects, creating a rich and immersive environment full of character and authenticity.
