Riley, an 11-year-old girl, moves with her parents to San Francisco, and her emotions struggle to keep her balanced. Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. When Joy and Sadness are accidentally swept out of Headquarters, Riley loses access to her core memories. As the two emotions journey through her mind to return, they discover the importance of embracing all feelings. Their teamwork helps Riley reconnect with her parents, allowing her to grow through change.
In Inside Out, animators used a tool called "Geolight" to give Joy a special light that followed her wherever she went. This allowed her character to always feel bright and radiant, emphasizing her cheerful personality. By linking the light directly to her movements, the animators could enhance the emotional impact of each scene without manually adjusting lighting for every frame.

The RenderMan team introduced this effect that give animators the opportunity to turn a character model into a mobile light source. By selecting a model, they could make it emit light that moved naturally with the character, creating dynamic and realistic illumination in the scene.
