It takes a steel will to hide your superhero talents from a world that still needs you but no longer appreciates what you’re capable of. Struggling with a prominent belly and a boring job, Mr. Incredible longs for the glorious days of upholding law and order, while his superhuman family tries to adapt to a “normal” life. Relief from the quiet suburban routine finally comes years later, when the family uncovers an evil plot and must join forces to save the day.
To achieve realistic deformations of muscles and the body during dynamic actions such as jumps, punches, and acrobatic movements, the Goo Muscle Rig was introduced. It allowed animators to credibly animate muscle contraction and expansion, adapting the characters’ skin to their movements and providing real-time visual feedback as animators manipulated the limbs.
The Goo Muscle Rig is an advanced rigging system that allows characters’ skin to adapt to movement by simulating the compression and stretching of the underlying muscles. This includes handling tricky areas like the shoulders, where the trapezius and pectoral muscles interact to produce natural deformations consistent with the pose. Animators can manipulate the poses directly, while the rig calculates realistic muscle and skin deformations in real time.
The Core Simulation Engine, on the other hand, functions as an internal physics engine that manages all collisions and interactions of long hair, keeping it fluid and realistic during movement. For Mr. Incredible, this system allowed the emphasis of his muscle power and mass without losing naturalness; for Violet, it ensured believable hair and slender body animations during action scenes and invisibility sequences.
